Suntree 12-Way Combiner Box IP66
The Suntree 12-Way Combiner Box IP66 is an outdoor-rated electrical enclosure. It consolidates multiple DC solar strings into a single, protected output circuit. Unlike smaller 4-way and 8-way enclosures suited to compact residential arrays, the 12-way configuration targets medium-to-large rooftop and ground-mounted systems. These installations require higher string counts under one protected housing.
The enclosure ships in two distinct forms. The first is the SHLX-PV12/1 — a factory-configured DC solar combiner with built-in fuses, surge protection, and a DC circuit breaker. The second is the 12-Way IP66 HA enclosure — a blank DIN-rail housing that installers populate with their preferred protective components.
Both variants carry an IP66 ingress protection rating. As a result, they suit the outdoor, dust-heavy, and high-humidity environments common across Kenya’s rooftop solar market — from Nairobi’s industrial zones to the coastal conditions of Mombasa.
Enclosure Construction and Materials
The Suntree 12-Way Combiner Box housing is constructed from engineering-grade ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene). It pairs this with a polycarbonate (PC) transparent cover. Together, this material combination is a deliberate design choice for outdoor solar applications:
- ABS body — delivers high impact strength, dimensional stability under thermal cycling, and resistance to colour degradation under prolonged UV exposure
- PC transparent lid — allows visual inspection of internal components, fuse status, and indicator LEDs without opening the enclosure
- UV-stabilised compound — resists photodegradation under equatorial solar irradiance, directly relevant to Kenyan rooftops with high annual insolation
- Flame retardancy — ABS in this class meets UL94 HB flammability classification; additionally, the PVC-bodied SHLX variant undergoes fire retardancy, temperature rise, and anti-impact testing per Suntree’s manufacturing standard
Beyond the shell materials, the enclosure also features a lockable, push-to-open lid mechanism. The self-locking positioning hinge allows one-hand access during maintenance. At the same time, it remains firmly sealed during normal operation.
IP66 Ingress Protection
The IP66 rating is defined under IEC 60529. It confirms two independent levels of protection:
- Dust protection — digit 6: Dust-tight. No particle ingress occurs under any test condition.
- Water protection — digit 6: Full protection against powerful water jets from any direction (12.5 mm nozzle, 100 L/min, 2.5–3 m distance).
In practice, this means the Suntree 12-Way Combiner Box can be wall-mounted on exposed exterior surfaces. No additional weather housing is required. Furthermore, IP66 exceeds the IP65 minimum commonly referenced for outdoor PV combiner boxes. This additional margin is particularly important in highland Kenya, where annual rainfall is high. It is equally critical for coastal installations, where salt-laden air accelerates material degradation over time.
12-Circuit Internal Layout and Solar Combiner Function
Moving up from 8-way to 12-way directly expands the number of PV strings that can be individually protected and combined at a single junction point. In practical terms, a 12-string configuration suits:
- Residential systems above 6 kWp using high-efficiency panels with lower current per string
- Commercial rooftop arrays of 15–40 kWp where multiple string runs converge before reaching the inverter DC input
- Ground-mounted systems with longer cable runs, where combining strings closer to the array reduces DC cable cross-section requirements back to the inverter
Internally, the enclosure accommodates a 35 mm standard DIN rail. This profile accepts the full range of Suntree DC protective components:
- DC Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCBs) in 1P, 2P, or 4P formats
- DC-rated fuse holders — the SHLX-PV12/1 variant includes one per string, rated at 1100 V for 1000 VDC systems
- DC Surge Protective Devices (SPDs) — the SHLX factory-built variant includes lightning protection on the output side
- Terminal blocks and busbar connections
In the SHLX-PV12/1 factory-built combiner, each of the 12 input channels carries an individual DC fuse. The single output side is then equipped with both a DC circuit breaker and an SPD. Consequently, this configuration delivers string-level overcurrent protection, output-side short circuit protection, and lightning surge protection — all within a single sealed enclosure and without requiring field assembly of individual components.
For cable routing, the enclosure uses pre-punched knockout entries on the top, bottom, and rear panels. These are compatible with standard PG-thread and metric cable glands. As a result, multi-directional entry supports flexible conduit routing on constrained installation sites and reduces wiring labour time on-site.
Wall-Mounted Installation
The Suntree 12-Way Combiner Box mounts directly to walls, structural columns, or equipment frames. It uses integrated rear mounting brackets for this purpose. Fixing to concrete, masonry, or steel surfaces requires only standard M6 or M8 fasteners. Wall mounting is therefore the recommended approach for solar combiner applications. It positions the enclosure close to the array, minimises DC cable run length, and reduces both voltage drop and resistive losses across the combined strings.
In addition, the product is specifically designed to withstand harsh environmental conditions. It conforms to the CGC/GF 037:2014 technical specification for PV junction equipment — the same standard Suntree applies across its entire SHLX-PV combiner series.
Standards and Certifications
The Suntree 12-Way Combiner Box IP66 complies with:
- IEC 60529 — Ingress protection classification (IP Code)
- IEC 60947-2 — Low voltage switchgear and controlgear
- CGC/GF 037:2014 — Technical specification for photovoltaic junction equipment (SHLX-PV series)
- CB, CE, TUV — International product safety certifications (applicable to SHLX-PV factory-configured variant)
Who Is This Product Best Suited For?
- Solar EPC contractors and installers on medium-to-large projects — Systems above 10 kWp with 12 parallel strings benefit directly from the 12-position circuit count. In addition, the pre-wired SHLX-PV12/1 variant reduces on-site assembly time compared to populating an enclosure from individual components.
- Commercial rooftop solar owners in Nairobi — Office parks, warehouses, and shopping centres running 15–40 kWp systems need a reliable, weatherproof string combiner. Because the IP66 rating handles equatorial rainfall and dust, no secondary weatherproofing is required.
- Ground-mounted solar farm developers — Ground systems produce higher string counts per array section. Accordingly, the 12-way capacity and outdoor IP66 rating align precisely with sub-array combiner requirements.
- Off-grid system integrators with large battery banks — Larger off-grid systems use multiple PV string inputs to charge battery banks through charge controllers. Per-string fusing at the combiner level therefore prevents a single faulted string from disrupting the full array.
- Electrical contractors in coastal and high-humidity environments — The ABS/PC build, UV-stabilised compound, and IP66 water-jet rating make this enclosure reliable in Mombasa, Kisumu, and coastal strip installations — locations where IP54-rated boxes show premature degradation within two to three years.
