Suntree 8-Way Enclosure for Combiner Box IP66 HA

The Suntree 8-Way Enclosure IP66 HA is a wall-mounted electrical distribution enclosure designed to house circuit breakers, MCBs, fuses, and DC protection components in outdoor and semi-exposed environments. Purpose-built for solar PV combiner applications, the IP66 HA combines a high-ingress-protection shell with an eight-circuit internal layout, making it suited to small-to-mid-scale residential and commercial solar installations across Kenya and the wider East African region.


Construction and Materials

The HA enclosure body is moulded from engineering-grade ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) plastic — a thermoplastic known for high impact resistance, dimensional stability, and resistance to colour fade under prolonged UV exposure. The transparent cover panel is manufactured from polycarbonate (PC), allowing visual inspection of installed components without opening the enclosure.

Together, the ABS shell and PC cover deliver:

  • Impact resistance — ABS maintains structural integrity under mechanical shock typical of rooftop and outdoor installation sites
  • UV stability — the material compound resists photodegradation under equatorial sun exposure
  • Flame retardancy — ABS used in this class of enclosure meets UL94 HB flammability classification as a minimum
  • Chemical resistance — suitable for environments with airborne dust, light industrial fumes, and rain splash

The enclosure features a spring-loaded or push-to-open lockable lid mechanism, which provides fast access for maintenance while maintaining a sealed closure during operation.


IP66 Ingress Protection Rating

The IP66 rating, defined under IEC 60529, certifies two levels of protection:

  • First digit — 6 (Dust-tight): Complete protection against the ingress of solid particles including fine dust. No dust enters the enclosure under any conditions.
  • Second digit — 6 (Powerful water jets): Protection against water jets from any direction, tested with a 12.5 mm nozzle at 100 litres per minute from a distance of 2.5–3 metres.

Eight-Circuit Internal Layout

The HA designation refers to the standard access series within Suntree’s enclosure range — optimised for installations requiring regular maintenance and component inspection. The internal space accommodates a 35 mm DIN rail spanning the full width of the enclosure. This standard rail profile accepts:

  • Miniature circuit breakers (MCBs) — single pole (1P), double pole (2P), or 4P formats
  • DC circuit breakers rated up to 1000 VDC (compatible with Suntree SHD or SHK DC MCB series)
  • Surge protective devices (SPDs)
  • DC fuse holders
  • Terminal blocks

The eight-way configuration provides eight independent circuit positions. In solar combiner applications, this typically maps to up to eight PV string inputs, each with individual overcurrent protection, consolidated to a single output. Furthermore, the internal guide rail support plate can be lifted to its highest position, removing the constraint of narrow wiring space and simplifying cable management during installation.

Cable entry is supported via pre-punched knockouts on the top, bottom, and rear panels, compatible with standard cable glands (PG or metric thread). This multi-directional cable entry reduces installation time on sites where conduit routing is constrained.


Wall-Mounted Installation

The Suntree 8-Way IP66 HA ships with integrated rear mounting brackets for direct wall mounting. The enclosure can be fixed to concrete, masonry, or steel surfaces using standard fasteners. Wall mounting optimises footprint on crowded electrical panels and positions the combiner box close to the PV array to minimise DC cable runs — a best practice for reducing resistive losses and voltage drop in solar installations.
